Canoeing and kayaking are potentially life threatening sports. Participants on trips promoted by the Central Iowa Paddlers will accept responsibility and liability for their own preparedness and safety.

Participants should contact the trip coordinator ahead of time for trip details and in case conditions or plans change. Bring rain gear, extra clothes in a dry bag, plenty of water and snacks, hat, sunscreen, PFD, extra paddle, and anything else you may need to be comfortable in unexpected weather conditions.

Trip Coordinators should provide the following information to trip participants: stream section or lake, date(s), meeting time and place, expected float time, level of difficulty, and name and phone number (and Email address) of contact.   Please submit your trip announcements to: centraliowapaddlers(~AT~)mchsi.com.

February 18, Armchair Paddlers, 2-4 pm at CanoeSport Outfitters: Paddling Near Home - Hank Ostwald of Spencer and Scott Evans of Knoxville will present a program about their paddling experiences on the different kinds of water near their homes. Hank will talk about his solo paddling trip on the Little Sioux River of northwest Iowa and Scott will share his paddling experiences on Lake Red Rock. They will share stories about how they experience the body of water closest to home and how it affects the way they look at the land where they live. March 2-4 - Iowa Rivers Revival www.iowarivers.org

March 11 Armchair Paddlers, 2-4 pm at CanoeSport Outfitters: Slate Islands of Lake Superior - Julia Martinusen and Randall Wilson of Des Moines will tell stories and show photographs of a 2006 paddling trip they took with friends to the Slate Islands in Lake Superior. April 15, 2-4pm - Watersheds Unite presentation, CIP Armchair Paddlers at the Northwest Community Center, 5110 Franklin Avenue in Des Moines (formerly scheduled for CanoeSport Outfitters in Indianola): James Martin and Brian Emerson of the WATERSHEDSUNITE project will conduct a multimedia presentation detailing their recent navigation and documentation of the entire Cedar River from Austin, MN, to Columbus Junction, IA. They will also discuss their innovative approach to watershed analysis which seeks to collect credible cultural data through storytelling, poetry, art, and music. The presentation will feature on the water video collected during the September 2006 trip. For information contact Robin at rbfortney(~at~)msn.com.

June 2 - First Annual Boat Float to celebrate the Des Moines River Water Trail in Des Moines. Decorate your boat and don a party hat! At 4 p.m., join follow paddlers, rowers and power boaters at the first bend north of Euclid Avenue for a parade of boats, a giant flotilla floating down to Prospect Park. Des Moines River Trail founder, Gerry Rowland, will be our grand marshal. Afterward, we will gather at Prospect Park for a picnic and enjoy some music together. August 18 - River Run Garbage Grab, Join us for our 6th annual river cleanup in partnership with the Izaak Walton League-Des Moines Chapter. This year the Iowa Whitewater Coalition, Iowa Department of Natural Resources, Army Corps of Engineers, City of Des Moines, Polk County Conservation Board, Des Moines Rowing Club, and Metro Waste Authority are helping us host and organize the event. We will focus on the Des Moines River from Cottonwood Recreation Area to Birdland Marina. Paddlers can choose to focus on the Cottonwood to Sycamore section, Sycamore to Prospect Park section or Prospect Park to Birdland Marina section. Other persons and groups will be invited to focus on the riverside trails. The event starts at 9 a.m. Lunch will be served from 11:30-2 p.m. at Prospect Park for all participants.
