Whitewater Paddling Clinics

Kayak Strokes Work

Location:  Iowa State University, State Gym pool followed by video critique at 912 Clark Ave, Ames
 
Start time:  11:00 noon (State Gym by the pool)
On water time:  11:30 pm to 3:00 pm (State Gym in the pool)
Video critiquing time:  3:30 pm to 5:30pm (912 Clark Ave, Ames)
Finish time (roughly):  5:30pm (912 Clark Ave, Ames)
 
Class size:  limited to 6 students, minimum of 3
 
Skills and drills to be worked on:  hand of God (rescue technique and receiver body positions), body weight location and posture (center of gravity versus center of buoyancy, cheek weighting, deck weighting, paddle weighting), edging versus leaning, torso rotation (separation of the upper and lower body), joint safety (box, flex), moving the boat versus the paddle, forward strokes, back strokes, sweep strokes (components, spinning versus carving), draw strokes (static, dynamic, bow, stern, open, closed, neutral, water pressure and blade faces), turns (initiate on the outside, control from the inside, obstacles), bracing (blade faces and elbows, sculling braces, balance on edge, minimize paddle weighting)
 
Main emphasis:  strokes work (aimed at improving people's strokes and possibly teaching new strokes or new components of strokes). Click here for a detailed class plan.
 
Target audience:  kayakers (whitewater or flat water) who are interested in improving their kayak maneuvering skills and making their paddling both easier and more effective
 
Costs:       ISU Kayak Club paid members $15 (membership is $25/semester or $40/year)
                Iowa Whitewater Coalition paid members who are not ISU Kayak Club members $25 (membership is $20/year)
                Non-ISU Kayak Club, non-Iowa Whitewater Coalition paddlers $60
 
Equipment needed:  your own food (snacks, lunch), pool gear (towel, rash guard, paddling shorts, ear plugs, nose clips, whatever - pool temperature runs pleasantly warm at 84-86 degrees F), kayak paddle, whitewater kayak with fitting spray skirt (arrangements can be made ahead with Piper Wall concerning the use of ISU Kayak Club paddles, kayaks, and spray skirts)
 
Skills needed to take the class:  some minimal ability to move your kayak using your paddle and a willingness to get wet
 
Deadlines:  registration and fees are due 2 weeks before each class. All but $5 are refundable prior to 2 weeks before each class, and are non-refundable after 2 weeks before each class.
 
Overnight lodging with training video watching available
at Piper Wall's for travelers so inclined
