Kayak Rolling Work
Sunday, January 27, 2008, 11:00 am to 4:30 pm
Location:  Iowa State University, State Gym pool followed by video critique at 912 Clark Ave, Ames

Start time:  11:00 am (State Gym by the pool)
On water time:  11:30 am to 2:00 pm (State Gym in the pool)
Video critiquing time:  2:30 pm to 4:30pm (912 Clark Ave, Ames)
Finish time (roughly):  4:30 pm

Class size:  limited to 6 students, minimum of 3

Skills and drills to be worked on:  hand of God (rescue technique and receiver body positions), underwater comfort (underwater boat swimming), hip snapping, bracing (blade faces and elbows, sculling braces, balance on edge, minimize paddle weighting), rolling paddle positions, rolling (C-to-C, sweep, sculling up)

Main emphasis:  roll enhancing techniques (not aimed at teaching the roll from scratch, aimed at improving people's rolls and increasing the types of rolls people can do and teach). Click here for a detailed class plan.

Target audience: kayakers (whitewater or flat water) who are interested in improving their roll(s), fine tuning their roll(s), learning more rolling techniques, or teaching various rolling techniques

Costs:       ISU Kayak Club paid members $10 (membership is $25/semester or $40/year)
Iowa Whitewater Coalition paid members who are not ISU Kayak Club members $20 (membership is $20/year)
Non-ISU Kayak Club, non-Iowa Whitewater Coalition paddlers $50

Equipment needed:  your own food (snacks, lunch), pool gear (towel, rash guard, paddling shorts, ear plugs, nose clips, whatever - pool temperature runs pleasantly warm at 84-86 degrees F), kayak paddle, whitewater or sea kayak with fitting spray skirt (arrangements can be made ahead with Piper Wall concerning the use of ISU Kayak Club paddles, kayaks, and spray skirts). Sea kayaks can be tricky to get into the pool because of door locations.

Skills needed to take the class:  some knowledge of braces, some knowledge of the hip snap, some prior roll training (preferably at least a 1 in 10 success rate with your roll)

Deadlines:  registration and fees are due 2 weeks before each class. All but $5 are refundable prior to 2 weeks before each class, and are non-refundable after 2 weeks before each class.

Overnight lodging with training video watching available at Piper Wall's for travelers so inclined.
