Play Boating Flat Water Skills
Sunday, February 24, 2008, 10:30 am to 5:30 pm
Location:  Iowa State University, State Gym pool followed by video critique at 912 Clark Ave, Ames

Start time:  10:30 am (State Gym by the pool)
On water time:  11:00 am to 3:00 pm (State Gym in the pool)
Video critiquing time:  3:30 pm to 5:30 pm (912 Clark Ave, Ames)
Finish time (roughly):  5:30 pm (912 Clark Ave, Ames)

Class size:  limited to 6 students, minimum of 3

Skills and drills to be worked on:  body weight location and posture (center of gravity versus center of buoyancy, cheek weighting, deck weighting, paddle weighting, torso rotation, upper and lower body separation), balance on edge (static and rock-a-byes, no paddle weighting), bracing (blade faces and elbows, sculling braces, balance on edge, minimize paddle weighting), draw strokes (water pressure and blade faces), edge transitions (pivot turns, cleans, stern squirts, underwater cartwheels), back deck roll, pool side bow and stern stalls, plowing bow stalls, double pump, back pull overs (reverse double pump), cartwheel strategy, loop strategy ("pogoing," benches)

Main emphasis:  getting vertical (aimed at paddlers who already have reasonable to good stroke technique knowledge and at least some edging and balance skills). Click here for a detailed class plan.

Target audience:  whitewater kayakers who want to do flat water bow stalls, stern squirts, and cartwheels.

Costs:       ISU Kayak Club paid members $15 (membership is $25/semester or $40/year)
IWC paid members who are not ISU Kayak Club members $25 (membership is $20/year)
                Non-ISU Kayak Club, non-IWC paddlers $60

Equipment needed:  your own food (snacks, lunch), pool gear (towel, rash guard, paddling shorts, ear plugs, nose clips, whatever - pool temperature runs pleasantly warm at 84-86 degrees F), helmet, suitable kayak paddle, suitable whitewater kayak (“free running” or “park and play” suitable for your size) with suitable spray skirt (arrangements can be made ahead with Piper Wall concerning the use of ISU Kayak Club paddles, kayaks, and spray skirts)

Skills needed to take the class:  a pool roll, ability to paddle your kayak along a desired path when on flat water (better paddling and balancing skills = better success learning playing skills), a prior pool session class or regular 2 hour session is highly recommended with strokes work, at least mid-level edging and balance skills.

Deadlines:  registration and fees are due 2 weeks before each class. All but $5 are refundable prior to 2 weeks before each class, and are non-refundable after 2 weeks before each class.

Overnight lodging with training video watching available
