Solo Canoe Strokes Work
Sunday, February 28, 2010, 11:30 am to 6:00 pm
Location:  Iowa State University, Forker pool followed by video critique at 912 Clark Ave, Ames

Start time:  11:30 am (Forker pool)
On water time:  11:30 am to 3:00 pm (Forker pool)
Video critiquing time:  3:45 pm to 6:00pm (912 Clark Ave, Ames)
Finish time (roughly):  6:00 pm

Class size:  3 students, minimum of 1 student

Skills and drills to be worked on:  body weight location and posture (center of gravity versus center of buoyancy), edging versus leaning, torso rotation (separation of the upper and lower body), joint safety (box, flex), moving the boat versus the paddle, forward strokes, back strokes, sweep strokes (components, spinning versus carving), draw strokes (static, dynamic, bow, stern, open, closed, neutral, water pressure and blade faces), turns (initiate on the outside, control from the inside, obstacles), bracing (minimize paddle weighting)

Main emphasis:  strokes work (aimed at improving people's strokes and possibly teaching new strokes or new components of strokes).

Target audience: canoeists (whitewater or flat water) who are interested in improving their canoe maneuvering skills and making their paddling both easier and more effective

Costs:       ISU Kayak Club paid members $15 (membership is $30/semester or $50/year)
Iowa Whitewater Coalition paid members who are not ISU Kayak Club members $25 (membership is $20/year)
Non-ISU Kayak Club, non-Iowa Whitewater Coalition paddlers $70

Equipment needed:  your own food (snacks/meal for eating during video critiquing), pool gear (towel, paddling shirt/rash guard -- maybe neoprene, paddling shorts, ear plugs, nose clips, whatever - pool temperature runs a bit cool at 82-84 degrees F), canoe paddle, maneuverable solo canoe less than 16 feet long (arrangements may be possible if made ahead with Piper Wall concerning the use of a solo whitewater canoe.)

Skills needed to take the class:  some ability to move your canoe in desired directions using your paddle and a willingness to get wet  Paddlers with already good stroke techniques may find this class slow but will probably find the video critique useful.

Deadlines:  registration and fees are due 2 weeks before each class. All but $5 are refundable prior to 2 weeks before each class, and are non-refundable after 2 weeks before each class.

Overnight lodging with training video watching available at Piper Wall's for travelers so inclined.
