Whitewater Paddling Clinics

IWC is pleased to announce continued joint collaboration with the Iowa State University Kayak Club (ISUKC) to provide classes to the Iowa whitewater kayak paddling community during 2008. Piper Wall, IWC and ISUKC member and ACA certified whitewater kayak instructor, will be the head instructor for the sessions. She will be assisted by IWC volunteers. All who know Piper will attest to her skill and enthusiasm to help people to become better paddlers.
 
Class sizes are limited, so be sure to register early. Payment is required for registration and is due 2 weeks before each class. All but $5 are refundable prior to 2 weeks before each class, and are non-refundable after 2 weeks before each class.
 
Free overnight lodging with training video watching available at Piper Wall's for travelers so inclined.
 
Kayak Strokes and Moving Water Work
Saturday, April 19, 2008, 9:00am to late afternoon
Class size:  limited to 10 students
Location:  Petersen Pits and Skunk River near Ames
Emphasis:  good techniques working with moving water

Kayak Eddy Skills and Surfing
Saturday, April 20, 2008, 9:00am to late afternoon
Class size:  limited to 10 students
Location:  Winnebago River, Mason City – dependent on water levels and resulting eddy lines and waves

MWA Beginner/Intermediate Whitewater Clinic
April 12-13, 2008
Skill level: Beginner through intermediate
Location: St. Francis River, MO
Equipment: Boat, paddle, helmet, spray skirt, plus cold-weather gear including warm-when-wet clothing and wet suit and/or dry top or dry suit.
IWC trip coordinator: to be determined
Description: 12 IWC members went to the Missouri clinics in 2005, and all learned a great deal while having fun! Smaller groups participated in 2006 & 2007. For more info, see www.missouriwhitewater.org.
Cost: $85 (paid to Missouri Whitewater Association)

Kayak Strokes Work

Short description:  improve your boat control - weight over boat and edging control, keeping your shoulders safe, various braces, various fiddling strokes - work on your ability to be where you want to in flat and moving water, improve your use of powerful torso muscles to move your kayak
