While Iowa does not have the rapids found in Minnesota or Wisconsin, there are specific locations where fun whitewater can be found. One such place exits on the Boone River near Webster City in Central Iowa. A natural 2 foot high ledge spans the river a little over a mile downstream of Albrights Canoe access at the top of a right-to-left bend in the Barner Wildlife Management Area #1. It should be noted that river right access of the ledge is often blocked by strainers. River left access is easy at lower flows and increasingly more difficult at higher flows due to reduced eddy access. The feature is playable from 1200 - 2500 cfs with surfs, spins and cartwheels are possible. The feature is not deep enough for loops. This section of the river also contains a significant amount of glacial-erratic boulders, offering excellent 'rock boof' opportunities depending on water levels. The Boone river is often used for paddling instruction classes due to its multitude of available river features/structures.
